Why Do I Need Confession Today?

Why should I go to confession... this is the 21st century!

Confession is not "old fashioned."  It is a timeless gift from the God of eternity.

God is Truth and cannot lie (Titus 1:2).  The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and He calls you to follow Him into all truth (John 16:13).  That means God wants to show you the truth about yourself. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to convict you of your sin, to bring you to repentance, and then cleansing and redemption, and finally Heaven.

The Spirit of Truth speaks in the Bible saying, "If we say, "We have fellowship with him," while we continue to walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin.  If we say, "We are without sin," we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. If we say, "We have not sinned," we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." - 1 John 1:6-10

These is no excuse for refusing to confess your sins.  Any excuse is a lie.  The Spirit of Truth will not dwell where there is deceit.  He calls you to seek God's mercy, be transformed, and always strive to grow closer to His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is calling you to unity with God.  Are you listening?  (Mark 9:7)

"If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins but a fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the adversaries." - Hebrews 10:26-27

At the end of your life you will meet Jesus, either as Merciful Savior or Just Judge.  He wants to be your Savior and show you mercy, not wrath.  But it's still your choice.  Which Jesus are you planning to meet?

"May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it." - 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

He has given the Church the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a wonderful way to tap into the mighty river of the life flowing from the Heavenly Throne of God:
"Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of its street. On either side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations." - Revelation 22:1-2

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is like these trees in Heaven.  Taste the Fruit of Mercy regularly and be healed from the wounds of sin.  The gates of Heaven are open.  One of the most important sources of strength for blessed Mother Teresa was going to Confession every week!  Jesus is waiting for you in Reconciliation, so you can be a strong, holy, peaceful, joyful person too.

"The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." Let the hearer say, "Come." Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water." - Revelation 22:17

"When you doubt how much God loves you, remember that it wasn't nails that held Jesus to the cross... it was love."
